On Nov. 1, 2007, the Women Democrats held their first meeting as an organization. Ten founding members attended. In only one year, the membership has more than quadrupled, with more joining all the time.
Women Democrats was formed as an outgrowth of member participation in the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Women's Consortium. It's mission is to support the principles, platforms and candidates of the Democratic Party by stimulating and expanding the public's participation in the election process. The goals of the organization are to provide a forum for discussion of local, state and national issues; to communicate the concerns of local constituency to candidates and elected officials; and to campaign, actively, for local, state, and national Democratic candidates.
During this, our first year in existance, the WDs circulated petitions for nine of their members to join the Fulton County Democratic Committee. Since then, City of Johnstown, Town of Johnstown and Caroga Lake committees were formed and five more members have been appointed to the County Committee. Among these is a tech-savvy person who has created a web site for Democrats (www.fulcodems.com).
The WDs mobilized and made numerous calls to get out the vote for the Presidential Primary in February, the local Primary in September and the general election just passed. More than a dozen members volunteered to staff the Democratic headquarters in Gloversville during the recent presidential campaign. They participated in the American Association of University Women's Antique Show fundraiser, contributed to the "shower" for victims of domestic violence and marched in the parade honoring Johnstown's 250th birthday.
To celebrate our achievements, the WDs sponsored a brunch on Nov. 22 at The Fireside. They were delighted to have two more new members attend and are especially pleased to welcome neighbors from surrounding towns and villages.
There is much more work to be done locally as well as nationally to support and strengthen government's ability to serve the people. Membership in the Women Democrats is open to all, regardless of political affiliation,
who support the mission and goals of the organization. Anyone interested in joining the Women Democrats is invited to attend the meeting. For more information call 752-4024 or 762-9888.
